AleSmith Brewing Company Releases Double Up Double IPA in Honor of Tony Gwynn Milestone
San Diego’s Hometown Brewery pays homage to hall of famer’s time at San Diego State University
San Diego, CA (March 2023) – San Diego-based brewery, AleSmith Brewing Company, is proud to announce the release of its limited edition Double Up Double IPA, an homage to legend Tony Gwynn and his time playing basketball at San Diego State University. Featuring artwork by San Diego muralists, Paul Jimenez and Signe Ditona of Ground Floor Murals, this beer celebrates the iconic achievements of one of SDSU’s all-time greats.
The name of the beer pays tribute to one of Tony’s most famous moments in March 1981. In the same week, Tony recorded 16 points and 16 assists against New Mexico and then 5 RBIs in seven at-bats against USC College. This was a truly remarkable double dip performance that became known as “The Double Dip Week” among college basketball fans everywhere.
Double Up Double IPA is a West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale that packs a serious punch! This 8% ABV brew surges with juicy hop flavor and aroma. Citra, Amarillo, and Cascade hops provide an intensely fruity character with notes of citrus, melon, and sweet fruit. A generous amount of carefully selected malts lend a firm backbone of malt sweetness that allows the hops to shine. This brew will be available on draft and in 16oz 4-pack cans featuring the art of Ground Floor Murals on the label.
“We have always wanted to paint a mural of Tony Gwynn in his college era, so this was a great opportunity to start that initiative and bring the idea to life. We really like to paint Tony Gwynn as a method of paying respect to one of the most honorable members of this city, and also as a way to keep his legacy going” says Ground Floor Murals. “It’s important to us to educate the youth on the history that took place before us and made great impacts on the communities we are born into. Tony Gwynn deserves the recognition for being a hero in various ways, and for all he’s done for San Diego.”
An online pre-sale for this special beer will begin on Thursday 3/16 at 12:00pm with additional cans available starting at 11:00am on Saturday, March 18th at the AleSmith Tasting Room in San Diego, CA.
